Who are the new heads of ISI?

Lieutenant General Nadeem Anjum of the 28th Punjab Regiment has been known in the Army as a tough and quiet officer.

He belongs to the 77th Long Course. As a brigadier, he commanded brigades in the tribal areas during military operations, while he has also served as chief of staff in the Karachi Corps.

He is a graduate of the Royal College of Defense Studies. It may be recalled that General Pervez Musharraf and General Raheel Sharif were also graduates of the same college.

After this course he was appointed as Major General Inspector General FC Balochistan North and also served as Commandant Staff College for some time as Lieutenant General.

After the alleged abduction of IG Sindh by the army in Karachi, he was appointed Corps Commander of Karachi in place of Lieutenant General Humayun Aziz.

?How powerful is the DG ISI

According to observers, the ISI operates at both the political and military levels and gives its input.

According to former ISI DG Lieutenant General (retd) Javed Ashraf Qazi, the Director General of ISI is very powerful as far as his organization is concerned.

"The DG ISI can keep people inside its organization, remove them, send them back to the army, post them out. But as far as outside the agency is concerned, the strength of the ISI chief depends on his relationship with the prime minister and the army chief.

According to him, "the prime minister can remove him from office and the strongest in the army is the head of the army."

Former ISI chief and controversy

Lt. Gen. Nadeem Anjum's predecessor and Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed of the Baloch Regiment has been the victim of various controversies as ISI chief.

Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed paid a surprise visit to Kabul on September 5 last month after the recent establishment of the Taliban government in Afghanistan, and photos and a video went viral on the media.

In these photos and videos, he can be seen holding a cup of tea in the lobby of the hotel and while talking to reporters on the occasion, he said, "Don't worry, everything will be fine."

This was followed by speculation in the international media, especially in the Indian media, about his visit.

Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed has also been accused of trying to influence the courts. This year, former Islamabad High Court judge Justice Shaukat Siddiqui, in his reply filed in the court during his appeal against his removal, had said that General Faiz Hameed came to his house and asked him to meet former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's NAB court. Asked about the appeals against the sentences, Shaukat Siddiqui replied, "Why are you asking me when you are fully aware of the legal issue?"

According to Shaukat Siddiqui's reply, General Faiz said, "If you had these appeals pending, what would you decide?" To which Shaukat Siddiqui replied, "I will decide according to the oath I have taken as a judge."

According to a document submitted to the court, "General Faiz Hameed immediately said that our two years of hard work would be wasted."

On Wednesday, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz also made similar allegations against Faiz Hameed while talking to reporters outside the Islamabad High Court. He said that General Faiz Hameed had ensured that no bench was formed which would guarantee Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz before the 2018 elections. Because if bail is given and Maryam Nawaz and Nawaz Sharif come out before the elections, then my two years of hard work will be wasted.

Maryam Nawaz also alleged that when she appeared before the JIT, the NAB representatives were just sitting in a dummy and its operation was "run by a brigadier behind General Faiz Hameed".

There was no immediate reaction from Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed or the military.

In addition, a no-confidence motion filed by opposition parties against Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjarani in 2019 failed by three votes. The failure was blamed on then-United Opposition candidate Mir Hasil Bizenjo by DG ISI Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed.

He faced criticism over the statement and a notice was sent to the court. The then DG ISPR Lieutenant General Asif Ghafoor had stated on the occasion that the allegations made by Hasil Bizenjo against the head of the country's intelligence agency were baseless and that defaming the entire democratic process for petty political gain was undemocratic. The six-point agreement between the organization and the government was said to have been signed with the help of Faiz Hameed, a military officer currently serving as a major general.
